An Open Letter to DoSomething.org Members and Young People Everywhere
To DoSomething.org members and young people everywhere:
Today some of us are experiencing joy, hope, pride, or relief. Others are feeling devastated, fearful, confused, or helpless. (If you’re in the latter category — or know those who are — one of the best things you can do is to practice self-care.)
While the election could paint the picture of a country divided, DoSomething.org knows that our community is united by the powerful and unwavering similarities we share.
Regardless of the candidate you supported, we all believe in doing good for others. We all believe that the only way to make a difference is to stand up for what’s right. And regardless of who our president is, we all have the power to make positive change. Right now. In our schools. In our places of worship. In our own communities.
We’re all in this thing together. We’re all citizens of the same world. And we all want to make things better. So get started today:
- Speak out against Islamophobic and anti-immigrant hate speech by showing pride in your family’s origins.
- Bridge our intergenerational divide by swapping stories with older adults.
- Reduce your school’s and your family’s carbon emissions by unplugging energy vampires.
- Spread positivity in your school by posting uplifting notes on bathroom mirrors.
- Show solidarity to friends who are feeling down by making an “IOU” activity books of things you can do together.
Our voices mattered on election day. Our voices — and our actions — matter even more today. Together, we can stand up for compassion, diversity, decency, progress, and hope. Together, we can make a better America and a better world. Let’s do this.
